Shared styles and components and guidelines for designing with libraries.

Introduction

Our primary design libraries are built in Sketch, which is our standard design tool today.

We are exploring our future enterprise design tech stack, but for the immediate term, please use Sketch.

If you use other design tools, such as Figma or Adobe XD, please be aware the symbols and styles may not translate directly. The library will no longer update automatically and the design system team won’t be able to support questions regarding other design tools. All new tools should be assessed for use at Boston Scientific.

These libraries contain styles, components, and patterns so designers don’t have to spend time recreating shared designs. These resources are meant for user experience and interface design. If you are looking for print resources, refer to Brand Standards.

Getting started

  1. Install Sketch
  2. Add the Anatomy Foundations and Anatomy Components libraries
  3. Start designing!

Sketch library

The Sketch library contains the latest foundations, components, and patterns. For general information around libraries, refer to Sketch's Libraries documentation.

Library

Steps to add the library to your Sketch:

  • Click the library links above
  • Go to the document actions
  • Click “Add Library to Sketch”

Using libraries

Libraries allow distributed design teams to work off of a single source of truth.

Best practices

Try to keep all symbols, color, text, and layer styles links intact when using them in your own files. This will allow your files to be updated with any new changes made in the library.

If the symbol or style link is broken, that instance will not be updated along with the rest of the library symbols or styles.

Symbols

From the main menu, select Insert then Symbols then Anatomy - Foundations or Anatomy - Components to insert a symbol. We do not recommend detaching or breaking the symbol.Screenshot of Sketch's symbols menu

Type styles

From the main menu, select Insert then Text Styles then Anatomy - Foundations to insert a text style. Text styles are carefully considered and are based on our type scale. We do not recommend detaching from the selected style to change the text.Screenshot of Sketch's type styles menu

Color swatches

From the Inspector side panel, open the color palette tool and select Anatomy - Foundations from the color palette selector. These colors are brand compliant. Do not use any other color swatch or hex value.Screenshot of Sketch's color palette menu

Layer styles

Layer styles are color settings for shapes, icons, and components. From the Inspector side panel, open the Layer Style selector within the Appearance section and select styles from the Anatomy - Foundations. Try to use the predetermined layer style overrides whenever possible.Screenshot of Sketch's layer menu

Library updates

Anytime the library is updated, you’ll get an alert in each project that uses the the library notifying you that you need to update to the latest library changes. For general information, refer to Sketch's Updating Library Components documentation.
